Mekabolt Review

(Image Source: Nintendo.com)                                                System I Played On: Ps4

Sometimes when roaming the digital stores, I see a retro inspired game that has such a low price I decided to pick it up and give it a try. Sometimes I am surprised with games like Blitzbreak and Downwell and other times disappointed, let's see what category Mekabolt lands in.

This game has you playing as a theme park employee who must collect batteries and stop the robot uprising. Armed with jumping and a stun gun, traverse levels, solve puzzles and collect all the batteries to save the day. This game has an opening and a closing cutscene with nothing in the middle, and when you start up the game, a basic title screen a few options and that is it. Much like the limited move set that was mentioned this game is bare bones in terms of presentation, you have four worlds with no cutscenes just an opening and ending that are ten seconds each if that.

The graphics are cute and the enemy and world design are fun and creative. The music on the other hand is completely forgettable not one track stuck with me. The sound design is fine, and the presentation is cute, the game uses the pixel art well for the enemies, lead, and environment. The animations are simple but fun.

You go from room to room, dealing with different enemies and solving the puzzle, moving on when you grab the battery. You run, blast, jump, and push, that is it, no new moves, and no upgrades, just the same moves, in each room to solve the puzzle and advance. The game throws new enemies and hazards at you from time to time but the gameplay is pretty samey. This game is about two hours long though, can easily be beaten in one sitting, there are no bosses and you have unlimited lives, starting over in each room. The games only collectible is the battery, so when you learn the game, they add a new obstacle every once in a while but you get what you see at the beginning. The game is short enough to not grow stale but has no variety in the game, it is so short that I only recommend this game if it is on sale. The game has some cute graphics, and fun puzzle style gameplay, though some of the puzzles feel too similar. The game play is fun, and the puzzles are fun from time to time, but the game is so short and so samey if you want a cute, retro looking. puzzle game this could work but only on sale. This game is fun for a short while, luckily it only lasts a short while, with mixed presentation, cute graphics, and gameplay that is kind of fun, I recommend it for puzzle fans on sale. But otherwise there are better options, I felt mixed about the game with a slight hint of indifference.

(Very Short, forgettable presentation, fun but repetitive gameplay, some fun to be had but can get tedious even with its short length, presentation is all over all the place, had fun, cute puzzle game, some major flaws hold it back, worth it on sale)
