Steamworld Heist

Some time ago I covered Steamworld Dig, a fantastic game that has you traversing a randomly generated mine in search of loot with a simple story that unfolds over time. But before I get to Steamworld Dig 2, there was a game that came out in-between those two that was a whole different style of game, and whole other genre, a game that takes us away from the underground and into the vast recesses of space. Steamworld Heist has a whole new cast, a whole new narrative, and whole new way to play the game. But was this departure good or should the team have kept with their winning formula? Let's see.

This takes the game from a metroidvania style game with exploration, and turns it into a turn based strategy game. You take control of Captain Piper Faraday as she must deal with space gangs, an evil empire, and more threats throughout space. As you continue the games story you can build your crew with a great amount of characters all packing their own unique set of skills to get the job done. The presentation is great, the writing is witty, and the music is nothing short of fantastic. This feels like a western in space, and the atmosphere is one of a kind, the writing is fun and light hearted while still being great, and the music and atmosphere are perfect. From the levels to the shops each bit of this game is teeming with life and personality, making this world having the right amount of mystery as well as lore to keep the plot going. The music in stages blends in more with the the situation so it is more subtle, quiet, and atmospheric, but all of the lyrical pieces are amazing and there is a good handful of them.

The gameplay is fantastic, you get a wide variety of weapons' and abilities as you head into each mission, each ship randomized with its own set of traps and obstacles to face. You and the enemy take turns trying to deal the most damage while setting yourself up to not take any yourself, it goes back and fourth until you reach victory or defeat. Whether it be turrets, enemies, a boss or more there is plenty of challenging variety and enemy types to keep the gameplay interesting from start to finish. The name of the game is enter a ship, loot it, clear the goal and get out without losing a life, whoever exits get EXP to level up and gain new skills, losing does not mean losing the character but they do not level up if they die. You can only carry so much though, so besides money you can sell past items and relics to be used at nearby shops, where you can by gear and recruit characters. With this also comes a wide cast of characters to take into these missions each with their own set of skills, different abilities and perks when leveling up and styles of combat. Such as taking an extra shot when successfully defeating an enemy to making themselves invincible, it is easy to find a favorite team and load out and go through the game.

The wide variety of difficulties which can be altered throughout the game, and the DLC add to this game as well. The gameplay is super fun and addicting clearing the main quest, available side quests, and DLC make this world feel full of surprises as you are exploring the map, filling it out as you go. Meeting new team mates, leveling them up, doing side quests and advancing the plot, even without the DLC this game has quite a bit to offer for it's lower price tag and it often goes on sale. This takes some of the ideas from Steamworld Dig and makes it its own with randomized ships and layouts but having personality, charm, and great gameplay. As an RTS it plays and controls great, with a good amount of challenge while still giving players options who just want to experience the game. It is a ton of fun, has great personality, a ton of variety in characters and battle styles all tied together into a fun experience. This game is on a ton of platforms so it is very easy to find, a great introduction to the RTS genre or another great addition for RTS fans, if you want a great adventure while getting loot, this game even at full price, is out of this world.

Thoughts: Nothing short of amazing
