The Mitchells V.S The Machines

This movie is incredible. I saw it once last year when it launched on Netflix, I was excited because it was from the same team who made "Spider-Man Into The Spiderverse".  I have watched it many times since, own the DVD, and it was one of my favorite movies of the year and in recent memory. A movie with a relatable family dynamic, fantastic and well timed comedy, and a ton of heart. This film is "The Mitchells V.S The Machines".

I'm going to keep details light as I plan on going more in depth in a future post, so think of this as a spoiler free review. The basic plot can be found in the title and a trailer or two. This film follows a midwestern family as they must help save the world from certain doom. Our leads are made of a father who has some catching up to do with modern trends, a caring mom, our lead who is the eldest child and a super creative, college bound daughter, a son who has an unlikely past time, and a adorable dog who can not look straight ahead. When you hear this described, a typical family movie with zany slapstick, witty one liners, and dated content, but this movie is far from it.

This film may have a joke or two that does not land, and a start that we have seen in countless movies before, but the writing is so solid, and the ninety five percent of the jokes are so hilarious, all tied together with a fantastic message and great characters into an amazing movie. The writing in this movie is fantastic, the characters are relatable, and even though there is a ton of comedy, this movie is full of heart. The messages in this movie about Family, embracing what makes you special, and seeing the strengths in others. The writing in this film subverts all expectations, and will kept me engaged from start to finish.

The animation style in the film is nothing short of incredible also. The movie has a look and style all its own but never distracts from the film much like the writing. They go hand and in hand, the amazing animation adding to some of the jokes and making great moments even greater. The emotions are conveyed in such an incredible way, this movie is great visually and as a film.

This film is an amazing watch, it is hilarious, full of great characters, fantastic writing, a look unlike any other, any flaws are outweighed in spades. The movie is great, it's a fantastic family film that will have you smiling and laughing from start to finish. It may be animated but the characters are relatable and convey emotion in an incredible way. This film is full of surprises and that is what this movie is, a pleasant surprise.

This movie is on Netflix and on DVD and is definitely worth the watch. An amazing family fim, full of comedy and heart, that is worth the trip.
