Stronger Than You (Steven Universe)

I from time to time love deep-diving into songs I love and seeing why I do in fact love them so much. I have done so with quite a few songs from the Tangled series, and I hope to do so with movies, broadway musicals, and other shows as well. One show with music that I absolutely adore is Steven Universe, the songs range from fun, to absolutely powerful and full of strong emotional moments and relatable themes. This surely will not be the last time this show is mentioned, but for my first foray into one of my favorite shows to ever come from Cartoon Network, I thought why not talk about the song that hooked me from the get-go. One of the first things I ever heard from the series long before I watched it, or listened to the music, was the song that made me a fan of the show. The song is still one I listen to on repeat to this day, of course, I am talking about "Stronger Than You". So let's dive in and see what this song is made of.

This song comes to us, of all places amid a fight. Jasper is telling Garnert our hero of the ballad to give up and that she knows what Garnet is made of. As the fight begins Garnet tells Jasper what she is truly built out of, that Jasper has no clue, and how she will not go down. Syncing up with the music as the the entire fight plays out, beginning and ending with this song, showing Garnet is made of Love, and will not let someone hurt the people she loves, proving at the end of the day, the love that was labeled as weakness is what made her strong.

The visuals that go with this scene and the way the song empowers the character and the one listening or watching simultaneously with the powerful lyrics is incredible. Now talking about the song on just a piece of music alone, removing the scene and cool visuals, and yes this song stands strong even without those.

The lyrics take a bold stance, letting whoever is trying to push the character or the listener down, as these lyrics are very relatable, think twice. Being made of love, and not changing, standing strong no matter who tries to push you down. Even though this is about a gem made of two gems from space, fused together, the song goes so much deeper, declaring being made of love.

Whether you are listening and are in a relationship or single, you could still be made of love. Love for your friends and family, the world around you. Loving yourself as well and not letting anyone push you around. The lyrics are snappy and memorable, fitting with the amazing instrumentation. Every character in this show has their own style to fit them individually, making them stand out even more than just visually in such a masterful way. Garnet's music has more funk and synth behind and this song is something that I feel inspired by, and bop my head to at the same time. This song is great for working out, pumping yourself up or even just running errands.

The message behind the music is strong, and something more people should listen to, living in love, even if it just loving yourself, and being made of it. Not letting the world around you drag you down but rather standing up for yourself. Powerful lyrics rooted in a simple idea, a strong message behind a wonderful and catchy beat. This song is still something I love to listen to on repeat, whether I just want to jam out or need a boost, this song is made of love and so much more.
