I Rented The Wild Robot To See What The Hype Is All About (Spoiler Free)
I have a love-hate relationship with movies coming to streaming so soon, sometimes it feels like it is undercutting its time at the theater, but it also has its benefits, like in the case of today. Life has been busy and I still have yet to find the time to see this film, it was announced to be coming to Peacock and Netflix eventually, but for the price of two tickets, I can watch it now, and so I decided to. I want to see the hype behind the Wild Robot, so I rented it, and here are my spoiler-free thoughts.
If I could describe this movie in one word, it is wholesome. There is some dark humor, and some funny moments as well, but this movie is ultimately very sweet and heartwarming. When a robot finds herself dropped onto an island, and interacting with the wildlife, being task-driven she is given the ultimate task in life, parenting when a baby duck falls into her care. There is more but that is just the basic run down I am going to give, and I will not be diving too deep into this film as I think it should be watched.
This movie is gorgeous both in story and also in visuals, whether to capture a comedic moment or a heartwarming one the animation in this movie is nothing short of spectacular. The animation is gorgeous and at moments, captures an almost oil painting-like look, using broad landscapes or close-up moments to convey emotion. That's another word this movie is a work of art when it is in motion or standing still.
The movie will have you full of good feelings from its themes on purpose, identity, fitting in, being different, and parenting. This movie has something for the children who love animation, the parents watching it alongside them, and everyone else as well. This movie has great themes and messages, all told through gorgeous visuals to help push those powerful moments even further. The characters have great moments both emotional and comedic, from the leads to even the smallest side characters. The themes are interwoven and balanced well, with characters being charming and most jokes not overstaying their welcome. The movie knows when to take its time and hang on a moment or to let a scene keep playing out or keep going, one scene in particular near the middle that relied mostly on visuals left me speechless due to how beautiful it was.
This is one of the most wholesome movies I have seen this year, it has such a warm feeling to it, and it made me happy I watched it. The number of times I said "Aww" through this film, through many moments that happened naturally and did not feel forced kept going up and up. I really enjoyed this movie and want to watch it again, even though I did not experience it on the big screen, I still had a great time watching it at home. The visuals are a marvel, the writing overall sweet, and some great messages make this movie one of my favorites of the year, and absolutely worth a watch. A truly wholesome movie that took me on a wild emotional ride, leaving me satisfied by the time the credits rolled.
