Some Of My Faveorite Cartoon Chrtimas Episodes
It's that time of year and as the month of December begins, I always start with Christmas specials and episodes of shows revolving around the holiday season, building up to the movies so I don't burn out. So I decided to share some episodes of cartons revolving around the most wonderful time of the year. So lets fire up way too many streaming services, go back to a time when these were all on cable, and dive into some Yuletide cartoons!
Phineas And Ferb Christmas Vacation (Phineas And Ferb)
Not as long as Summer vacation but still just as wonderful and relaxing, Christmas vacation gives us a much-needed break for friends, family, and fun. Phineas and Ferb embody making the most of every day during this season just as much as when it's hot outside. Packed to the brim with jokes and some very catchy songs, this is a fun and wholesome episode of the show. It starts strong and does drag in the middle, and there are a couple songs too many. Perry and Doofensmirtz's storyline in this provides so many laughs and one of the more catchy songs and is a delight every time the duo is on screen. There are some great songs such as "Christmas Feeling" and "Christmas is Starting Now", and some great jokes. Much like opening presents, a couple of them were not the best but most of them are, there is plenty of good in this special, and is worth a watch, just not my all-time favorite, but one I find myself watching every year.
Hey Hey It's Knishmas (Chowder)
This one brings back so many positive memories along with Johnny Bravo's, Dexter's Lab, Codename Kids Next Door, and countless other Cartoon Network episodes for the Christmas season, and I love all of them and have a great deal of nostalgia for them. If I had to pick one it would be Chowder. This one keeps the holiday theme while combining the wacky humor I love in this show. The crazy nature of the humor is present throughout and works wonderfully, and their own take on Santa is not only creative but also makes sense in terms of their world. This one has many hilarious visual and spoken jokes, while still having some fun holiday heart in it.
Comfort And Joy (Justice League)
This one has all the heart one could possibly need, while still having some humor and even some action. Three stories in this one, one where Superman brings Martian Manhunter to his home for the holidays, one with Green Lantern and Hawkgirl having celebrations of many kinds, a few involving combat, and my personal favorite, the Flash trying to get a toy for the kids at the orphanage. Each story is balanced well and this episode is packed with holiday cheer.
The themes of spreading goodwill to others is so strong in this episode. It just makes me feel good after watching it, every story gets the right amount of screen time and it is just fun. Action, some laughs, but most importantly the heart of the season. Passing on goodwill to others with hopes of nothing in return. A great stand alone episode and one I find myself watching multiple times every holiday season.
Christmas Who?! (SpongeBob Squarepants)
This one is my all-time favorite, the one I watch multiple times a year. The very first SpongeBob Christmas episode "Christmas Who?". This tale of Christmas coming to Bikini Bottom is packed with laughs, a super catchy song, and even a good amount of heart. The use of live-action in this also brings in tons of laughs, and the jokes both visual and spoken often if not always hit the bullseye. This one captures all the joy of the season while also still reminding me why I love SpongeBob so much, (or I should say the first 100 episodes, first movie, musical, and some of the video games). It reminds me why he is always one of my go-to cartoon characters, and I remember watching this when it premiered. This episode always brings me back to wonderful childhood days, Christmas breaks, time with family, watching cartoons, and playing games, memories that bring a tear of joy to my eye. I love the holiday season, and it has so many different meanings to me now, but I still love it nonetheless, and this special is a great way to step back and ring it in every year.
There are almost too many to go over, and I did cover even more on my podcast Late Night sprites which is where most podcasts can be found, so go and give it a listen if you want to hear me talk about Fairly Odd Parents, Codename Kids Next Door and other Christmas episodes I love.
